Proven, Independent Leadership
As you know, the past legislative session was very challenging. We faced a huge budget deficit and a sluggish economy. There were some positive things we accomplished and I was disappointed that we could not do more in some areas. One thing is clear, however, there is still much to be done.
In the area of public education, I supported additional funding of $1.2 Billion for our state’s public schools. I helped defeat attempts to create voucher programs that would have diverted much needed dollars from our public schools in North Texas. I voted to support our teachers by reimbursing them for the cost of school supplies and strengthened discipline standards in the classroom. We also maintained our state teachers’ health insurance plan which I helped create in the 77th Session.
The Homeowner’s insurance crisis was addressed and we closed loopholes that had allowed insurance companies to escape regulation and raise our rates to almost twice the national average. Insurance companies are now required to file their rates with the Insurance Commissioner for approval before charging us as consumers. I will be diligently following these new reforms to be sure that we are doing what is best by Texas homeowners.
Locally, I Joint-Authored legislation exempting travel trailers from property taxes. I also authored legislation to ease governmental regulation on local oil and gas producers who have a clean record. I supported our veterans by voting for legislation that protected private information from military discharge records, helping to curb identity theft. And I authored legislation that increased the penalties for the sale of drugs near where children gather such as our local Boys and Girls Clubs and YMCA’s.
Continuing to Fight for North Texas Into the Future
The future legislative session is pivotal for us in Wichita and Archer Counties. We must work to lower our property taxes, maintain educational excellence and promote economic development for North Texas. Now is not the time for inexperience.
As a lifelong resident of Wichita Falls, I understand the importance of all of these issues. I’ve dealt with them as a former City Councilman. As an insurance agent, I know our families must have access to affordable healthcare. As a businessman, I realize building a strong economy takes strong public schools, which is why we must continue to offer our students a quality and equitable education and give our teachers the tools they need and treat them as professionals – active and retired alike.
As State Representative for our District, I have worked to represent you on statewide issues and local issues as well. I have been an advocate for our local businesses, state hospital, MHMR center, University and schools. I pledge to continue to be an independent North Texas voice that makes our values and interests heard in the Texas House of Representatives.
