Some State Representatives React to Republican Governors Considering Turning Down Stimulus Money

Democratic Representative David Farabee says the stimulus package is a good thing because it’s Texas tax dollars coming back to Texas, and Republican Rick Hardcastle says if money intended for Texas gets turned away and given to another state that’s not in the best interest of people in Texas.
Hardcastle says if the stimulus bill brings back federal tax money to Texas programs that’s a good thing.
However, he says if money goes to creating new programs the state is going to have to find funds to pay for after the stimulus money is gone he understands why some governors may want to turn it away.
“It’s how it’s going to expand programs or create new programs that states would be strapped with in future years without any federal money. If there’s money available for programs that we’re already doing and all it means is the federal government is picking up more of the tab that’s a whole different ball game,” says State Representative Rick Hardcastle.
Governor Rick Perry finally announced he plans to accept the stimulus money.
Representative David Farabee says he supports the stimulus funding as long as its used to invest in jobs, education, infrastructure, and crime prevention.
Congressman Mac Thornberry’s office says it’s too soon to tell what would happen to a state’s stimulus money if the funds are rejected.
They say it could either increase the funding for other states, or remain unappropriated and get sent back to the federal government’s general fund.
